Patriots send Jonas Gray home from practice for oversleeping

He used the ol’ “my cell phone died” line.

Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports

Just because you break a New England Patriots record doesn't mean you can show up late to Bill Belichick's practice.

Jonas Gray, the out-of-nowhere sensation who ran for a franchise-best four touchdowns last week, was a no-show on the practice field on Friday. According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports 1, that's because the running back was turned away from Gillette Stadium when he arrived late. Gray reportedly claimed that he overslept after his cell phone died and the alarm didn't go off.

Gray has texted his teammates to apologize and is hoping to meet face-to-face with Belichick Friday afternoon, according to Garafolo.

It will be interesting to see if the incident has any effect on Gray's touches this Sunday against the Detroit Lions. He made the most of a career-high 37 carries last week against the Indianapolis Colts, rushing for 201 yards and the four scores. Belichick is famously fickle with his running back distribution, and the signing of recently-released Steeler and former Patriot LeGarrette Blount earlier this week gives the coach another player to divert carries to.
