The league is thinking about making changes to the playoff format for the first time since 1990.

If the new system went into effect, only one team in each conference would have a first-round bye. There would then be three games for both the AFC and NFC on wild-card weekend, getting the field down to eight teams for the divisional round. From there, everything would be the same as it is now. Also, one of the three wild-card games in each conference would reportedly be played on Monday night instead of the weekend.
For the league to make a change, 24 of the 32 owners would have to vote for a new system. It seems like a slam-dunk considering it keeps more teams involved in the playoff race to the end and more importantly, creates additional revenue. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones already endorses the idea, per Maske.
“I just would think the Cowboys have got a better chance to get in if we can get a couple more teams in it,” Jones said, then added: “But seriously, I think for our fans, for everyone concerned, some additional playoff games are positive.”
