Ndamukong Suh suspension could be reduced to fine, according to report

Ndamukong Suh may win a favorable appeal decision, allowing him to play Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Update: Suh wins appeal, will play against Cowboys

Ndamukong Suh's one week suspension for stepping on Aaron Rodgers' ankle could be reduced to a fine upon appeal, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora. Suh appealed the decision Tuesday.

If Suh is able to play, it will be a big boost to the Detroit Lions, who will play the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round of the 2014 playoffs this Sunday. The Lions' run defense is ranked No. 1 in the league in terms of yards per game, yards per carry and by Football Outsiders' DVOA, thanks in large part to Suh's presence in the middle of the defensive line. Detroit will be facing the league's leading rusher in DeMarco Murray.

According to La Canfora, the suspension would be reduced to a "huge fine." Suh has been accused of dirty play in the past, including an egregious late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne during the preseason. In a letter to Suh, NFL Vice President of Football Operations Merton Hanks wrote:

You did not respond in the manner of someone who had lost his balance and accidentally contacted another player who was lying on the ground. This illegal contact, specifically the second step and push off with your left foot, clearly could have been avoided.

The play in question occurred late in Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Suh turned around after the play had passed him, and initially appeared to step on Rodgers’ ankle by accident. His second heel came down on Rodgers shortly after, however. Coupled with Suh’s history, the NFL and many fans claimed that the step was intentional.
