Super Bowl 48, score update: Peyton Manning throws pick-6, Seahawks lead 22-0

Peyton Manning now has two interceptions, and this one cost the Broncos a touchdown, the 13th pick-six in Super Bowl history.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

Just when the Broncos were starting to get something going on offense, Peyton Manning threw his second interception of the game, and this one was returned for an interception by Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith. The interception was caused by pressure from defensive end Cliff Avril, who dominated Broncos right tackle Orlando Franklin on the play.

You’ll recall that Smith was the Seahawk who made the interception on the much more famous Richard Sherman tip in Seattle’s last game. That one ended the game, and this one promptly stopped Denver’s first drive that had any success.

It took until the second quarter of the game, but the Denver Broncos finally picked up a first down. Until the interception, Denver and Peyton Manning faced four third downs on their fourth drive of the game, and they converted all four of them. The first conversion came when Knowshon Moreno ran for 5 yards on third-and-1, and the second was a Manning screen pass to Demaryius Thomas. The next conversion came on a Manning pass to Wes Welker. On the fourth, Montee Ball rushed up the middle for a 2-yard gain.

The drive was the longest sustained movement of the day for the Broncos, who increased their yardage total in the game from 11 to 70 yards. That sustained success, however, was wiped out by the jump ball from Manning and the 13th pick-six in Super Bowl history.
