Super Bowl 2014 prop bets: Orange Gatorade and no crying for Knowshon Moreno

Pete Carroll received a Gatorade bath of orange Gatorade, which was one of the many prop bets for Super Bowl XLVIII.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

For the first time since 2008, tails was the winning side for the coin toss, kicking off a night of ridiculous prop bets during Super Bowl XLVIII. After five consecutive years of heads ending as the winning side of the toss, tails snapped the streak on Sunday, as the Seattle Seahawks correctly called the toss.

Here are the other Super Bowl prop bets that were decided on Sunday:

National anthem was finished quickly

The length of the national anthem has typically been under two minutes; however, a two minute and 35 second rendition from Alicia Keys in the year prior coupled with the first ever opera singer performing led sportsbooks to set the over/under for length at two minutes, 25 seconds. Renee Fleming didn’t come close to that mark though, finishing in a swift one minute and 53 seconds.

Knowshon held it together

The more ridiculous national anthem bet was whether or not Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno would cry during Fleming's rendition. While the fifth-year back had an emotional moment on the sideline earlier in the year that was caught by cameras, he didn't cry on Sunday which was a win for the heavily favored "no" that carried a line of -700.

It was cold, but not THAT cold

From the day MetLife Stadium was announced as the site of Super Bowl XLVIII, the weather of the game was discussed and eventually analyzed. The over/under for temperature was set at 34 degrees, which would have been the coldest in Super Bowl history. However, it was 15 degrees warmer, which was still the coldest game since Super IX, but far from the chilly night some expected.

Safety to start

The first play from scrimmage in the Super Bowl was a snap that went past the head of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and resulted in a safety that gave the Seahawks a 2-0 lead. For those that were crazy enough to bet that a safety would be the first score of the game, it was a good night, as the odds were set at +4000 for the event.

No hat for Bruno, no shirts for RHCP

There were a few prop bets for the halftime show, including a couple based on the fashion choices of Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While the favorite was that Bruno Mars would wear a fedora during his performance, he elected to go without a hat, which paid 2/1. Anthony Keidis and Flea for RHCP both elected to go shirtless during the performance as well, which satisfied the -140 favorite that at least one band member would be shirtless.

Additionally, “Locked Out Of Heaven” was the first song performed by Bruno Mars, which was initially the favorite but was passed by “Treasure” before game time.

Orange comes out on top

The Gatorade bath for Super Bowl XLVII, or lack thereof, was a big loser for bettors, as John Harbaugh wasn’t given the traditionally celebratory dunking. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wasn’t as lucky on Sunday, as he was hit with a bath of orange Gatorade. Orange was one of the favored colors at 3/1, but wasn’t the favorite, as clear was receiving 2/1 odds.
