NFL rumors: Jeremy Maclin, Emmanuel Sanders draw Jets’ interest

Geno Smith may finally be getting some help.

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith didn't have many options to throw to during his rookie year, but the team is looking to change that.

The Jets are interested in signing one or both of wideout free agents Jeremy Maclin and Emmanuel Sanders, the New York Daily News reports.

Maclin, who missed the entire 2013 season with a torn ACL, has expressed interest in re-signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, fellow Eagles wideout Riley Cooper also has an expiring contract, and Maclin could be the odd man out in Philly. Maclin has said he's open to signing a one-year deal, which would keep the Jets from having to invest too much in a guy coming off knee surgery.

With Mike Wallace in Miami, Sanders played well in his first season as a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He set career highs in receptions (67), yards (740) and touchdowns (six).

Smith's inconsistent rookie year under center can at least in part be attributed to the Jets' piecemeal receiving corps. With top threat Santonio Holmes hampered by injuries, Smith was forced to lean on the no-name trio of Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson and Stephen Hill. Holmes had little impact even when he was on the field, and is expected to be released this offseason.

Sources tell the Daily News that the Jets are not expected to make a run at Denver Broncos wideout Eric Decker, who will likely enter free agency as the top receiver available.
