NFL news roundup: Patriots unlikely to re-sign Brandon Spike or franchise Aqib Talib

The Patriots have a few important decisions to make in free agency this offseason.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be ready to part way with wide receiver Mike Williams.

Williams spent most of the 2013 season injured and is now in trouble with the law. He was charged with criminal mischief and trespassing after an incident in December, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Greg Auman. Williams is just one season into a six-year, $40 million contract. It may be time for the Buccaneers to move on.

Here’s some other news you may have missed on Sunday:

Patriots unlikely to re-sign Brandon Spikes

Brandon Spikes and the New England Patriots haven't always had the best relationship, so it shouldn't be a huge surprise that the Boston Herald expects the two sides to part ways this offseason. In fact, it's unlikely the Patriots will even offer him a contract at this point, according to the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe.

Patriots won't place franchise tag on Aqib Talib

The top priority for the Patriots this offseason should be to bring back cornerback Aqib Talib. The Patriots are unlikely to put the franchise tag on Talib, however, according to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. The tag would carry a $12 million price tag, which is too much for New England to handle. The question then becomes how friendly a deal Talib is willing to make with New England.

Lions focused on re-signing Pettigrew

The Detroit Lions recently re-signed center Dominic Raiola to a one-year contract, and tight end Brandon Pettigrew is their next priority, according to the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett. The Lions used the No. 20 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft on Pettigrew, and he's had an up-and-down career this far in Detroit. In 2013, Pettigrew had 416 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
