Browns match offer sheet for Alex Mack, per report

The Cleveland Browns will retain the services of center Alex Mack, per reports.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Browns center Alex Mack looks like he'll be keeping that title for the foreseeable future. The Browns have matched the Jacksonville Jaguars' offer sheet for the Pro Bowl center, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. News of the offer sheet came out earlier in the week, with a report on Thursday that Mack would sign it.

Said offer sheet is reportedly worth a hefty sum of $42 million over five years, with $18 million guaranteed over the first two years of the contract. Cleveland had five days from when Mack signed the contract to decide if they wanted to match. The fact that the decision to match came so quickly is a surprise to no one, as Cleveland has been adamant throughout this process that it intends to keep the center at whatever cost.

Early on in free agency, Mack’s camp suggested that it was possible to get the center signed to an offer sheet that the Browns would be unable to match, so either they were bluffing or they were fooled and misinformed about what the Browns would be willing to do. Whatever the case, the offer sheet is definitely a player-friendly deal.

Said offer sheet reportedly includes a player option after the second year that would allow Mack to void the contract and his free agency, giving him an out if Cleveland keeps up its trend of total instability at the organizational level all the way down to the locker room. He cannot be designated a franchise player after voiding the contrat, either. Further, he will earn another $8 million in guarantees if he elects not to void the contract.
