The Oakland Raiders have traded quarterback Terrelle Pryor to the Seattle Seahawks, according to a report from Pro Football Talk. The Raiders acquired a seventh-round pick in exchange for the former third-round pick out of the supplemental draft, according to Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports.

The Seattle Seahawks took a flyer on Terrelle Pryor by sending a seventh-round pick to the Oakland Raiders.

Pryor may have been released at some point this week if another team didn’t want to deal. Typically, in these situations, the team will ask for a sixth- or seventh-round pick to guarantee that the player doesn’t hit the open market. It’s hard to imagine multiple teams would have been lining up to drive up the price, but the Seahawks clearly felt they needed to make a move.

Seattle has shuffled the quarterback position multiple times in recent seasons. Originally, the team had planned on Matt Flynn taking over as the starter, but he was usurped by Russell Wilson as a rookie. So Wilson took over, Flynn went elsewhere and the Seahawks ended up with Tarvaris Jackson returning. Going forward, Wilson is the starter and Jackson is the backup.
It’s not likely that Pryor can beat Jackson for the backup job and the Seahawks probably don’t expect him to even compete for it. Jackson is entering his ninth year in the NFL, and has played in 54 games over the course of his career. He’s completed 59.6 percent of his passes with 39 touchdowns and 35 interceptions, and played well in relief last season when he was needed.
Pryor has been adamant about wanting to go somewhere where he can compete for a starting role, but there’s zero chance of that happening in Seattle. Last season, Pryor played in 11 games and completed 156 of 272 passes for 1,798 yards, with a completion percentage of 57.4. He also had seven touchdowns with 11 interceptions, managing to put up 576 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Looking at those passing numbers, it’s hard to imagine what the Seahawks could be interested in when it comes to Pryor. But the rushing yards could be of interest. Pryor is an excellent athlete, and the Seahawks could be interested in working him on the field for specific plays, or they could be interested in changing his position to something like wide receiver. Further, Seattle, could be looking for a guy who can come in and run some of the more intricate running or option plays at the quarterback position in the event that Wilson goes down with injury.
Whatever the reason for going out and getting him, the Seahawks were willing to part with a seventh-round pick to take a chance.
