Robert Griffin III will drive the pace car at this weekend’s Toyota 400

It will be Griffin’s longest drive of the season.

If RG3 doesn’t know how to operate in the clutch he better figure it out before Saturday. Griffin has been tapped by NASCAR to drive the pace car at this week’s Toyota 400 in Richmond, Va.

Like most good things in life, the whole arrangement was Dale Earnhardt Jr.‘s idea. The famous driver shares a love of the Redskins with Griffin as well as whatever bond that two guys who were named after their dads probably have. He tweeted at the Richmond International Raceway a while back lobbying to get the quarterback behind the wheel.

After a little back and forth, Griffin said he was down to ride.

Griffin will be heading down to Richmond to hang with Dale Jr. and Joe Gibbs- another guy who knows a couple of things about Redskins football. It's only fitting that hopping into a NASCAR would be the next step for Griffin, who walks around with corporate logos plastered all over him anyway.

The fan-friendly Griffin is a good choice to drive the pace car in Richmond, where the Redskins hold their training camp. I would personally love to see this NFL/motorsports trend continue with Ndamukong Suh getting a chance to legally drive like a maniac for once at the Michigan International Speedway, or Roethlisberger driving the pacer at a motocross race ... just as long as they keep Irsay away from the Indy 500.
