Josh Freeman released by New York Giants

The now-journeyman quarterback failed to unseat Curtis Painter or Ryan Nassib as Eli Manning’s back-up.

The New York Giants announced the release of quarterback Josh Freeman on Friday among a series of roster moves before the weekend.

Freeman now becomes the best of an uninspired bunch of free-agent quarterbacks for teams to consider, and it cements the Giants trio of options on the roster as the familiar bunch from last season. Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib, and Curtis Painter all remain with the team as Freeman failed to unseat any of them in recent OTAs.

Freeman entered the NFL as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first-round selection in 2009 and looked like a solid young quarterback prospect. However, his growth curve fell off as did his accuracy and decision-making, and the Bucs were ready to trade him early this last season after starting 0-3. After finding no takers for a deal, the Bucs released Freeman in early October.

The Minnesota Vikings claimed Freeman on waivers, but ended up sitting the quarterback for most of the season despite a middling group of their own with Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder in house. Freeman wound up as the team's third-string quarterback and hit the free-agent market this offseason.

The good news is that Freeman is still only 26-years-old. He has 63 NFL starts with a career record of 24-36. He has thrown 80 touchdowns and 67 interceptions in five seasons and holds a 57.6 career completion percentage.

Freeman was recently signed by the Giants on April 21.
