Jason Mitchell has been found guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery in the 2007 fatal shooting of former Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor. Mitchell was handed a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole along with an additional 40 years for robbery.

Mitchell was the mastermind behind a robbery attempt after attending a birthday party at Taylor’s house and seeing large amounts of cash. He, along with four other men, broke into the home in November 2007 on a night when Taylor was asleep with his girlfriend and daughter. Taylor confronted the intruders, and one of the men, Eric Rivera, shot him in the leg. Taylor bled to death.
Rivera was convicted of second-degree murder last November and sentenced to 57 years in prison. Another defendant, Venjah Hunte, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Two more, Charles Wardlow and Timmy Brown, await trial.
“I’m pleased with the verdict,” Pedro Taylor, Florida City police chief and father of the slain football star, told the Miami Herald. “Still got two more to go.”
