Brandon Flowers signs with San Diego Chargers

The Chargers added the best remaining free agent on the market and significantly bolstered their secondary with the deal.

The San Diego Chargers have signed veteran cornerback Brandon Flowers, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Flowers' decision was expected to come midweek after he flirted with several teams, but San Diego was the only visit that he took. The Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens were among the other teams said to be interested in Flowers.

Flowers was recently released by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the move was a bit of a surprise in NFL circles. He had a high salary cap figure for a team that needs wiggle room for upcoming extensions for Justin Houston and Alex Smith, but he was also coming off a Pro Bowl season. He immediately became one of the best available free agents on the market.

Flowers made the Pro Bowl in 2013 despite what many considered to be a down year for the 28-year-old. Originally drafted by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Flowers had been the team's best cornerback throughout the past six seasons.

The Chargers have now significantly elevated their secondary with the addition of Flowers and 2014 first-round selection Jason Verrett. Both players should be slotted as starters on the outside, sliding Shareece Wright, Richard Marshall and Steve Williams down on the depth chart.

John Gennaro from Bolts From the Blue calls this a “win now” move for the Chargers:

This means that Tom Telesco, he with the long-term plan, is try to win right now. San Diego will likely pay at least part of an arm and half of a leg for Flowers, a Pro Bowl CB last year, to fix their biggest weakness from last season. Teams that do that are focused on the Super Bowl. They're focused on championships. He may not be destroying the future to improve the present, but the current Chargers front office definitely seems intent on ripping back open the team's "window of opportunity" with Philip Rivers at QB.
