Michael Sam responds to Tony Dungy’s comments: ‘Thank God he wasn’t the St. Louis Rams coach’

The Rams made their rookie pass rusher available to the media at training camp for the first time on Tuesday.

St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam finally had his chance to publicly respond from Rams training camp on Tuesday to recent comments made by former NFL coach Tony Dungy. Via ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Sam said, "Thank God he wasn't the St. Louis Rams coach. I have a lot of respect for Coach Dungy. And like everyone in America, everyone is entitled to their own opinions."

Dungy made waves on Monday when remarks made about Sam came out in the Tampa Tribune calling him a “distraction” due to his sexual orientation. The backlash swiftly came against Dungy, who claimed that he would not have taken Sam in the 2014 NFL Draft, and Dungy quickly offered an additional statement through Pro Football Talk to “clarify those remarks.”

Sam was drafted in the seventh round by the Rams after leading the SEC in sacks last season as a senior at Missouri and being named Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
