Derek Carr suffers concussion in Raiders’ preseason win

The rookie quarterback’s night ended in the fourth quarter with a hit by Lions defensive lineman Larry Webster.

The Oakland Raiders scratched out a narrow 27-26 win over the visiting Detroit Lions in preseason play on Friday night. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they also lost rookie quarterback Derek Carr to a concussion on a fourth quarter hit by Lions defensive end Larry Webster.

Webster came around the left tackle and caught up to Carr as the quarterback rolled to his right to make a throw. Before Carr could get the ball out of his hands, Webster brought him down from behind. Here’s the play:

Carr came up holding his ribs. He was pulled from the game and replaced by Matt McGloin. It was initially reported as a rib injury, but head coach Dennis Allen revealed after the game that Carr had also sustained a concussion on the hit.

The Raiders rookie finished his night with a 9-for-16 line with 109 passing yards and a touchdown. Until the injury, Carr was making a case to claim the starting job. Matt Schaub threw an interception and continued his putrid preseason effort.

Carr will have to pass muster with the NFL's concussion protocol before he can return to the field. Oakland's next preseason game is Aug. 22 against the Packers.
