When Johnny Manziel showed up in Cleveland, the Browns went out of their way to make it known that Brian Hoyer was invariably their starting quarterback. But after Manziel began impressing in training camp, head coach Mike Pettine backed off to the point of declaring it an open competition. The Tim Tebow Chronicles
We should know either way soon enough. Pettine confirmed last week that he’s hoping to have a starter named by Tuesday. While there’s still a lot of uncertainty -- one recent rumor claims Cleveland brass doesn’t want to expose their golden boy to the hard-hitting Pittsburgh Steelers defense in the regular season opener -- it seems that Monday will be the decisive showdown between Hoyer and Manziel.
Lost in all that are the concerns for the home team. Washington faces a myriad of challenges heading into the season, not the least of which is acclimating Robert Griffin III to Sean McVay's new offense. They're also trying to break in a hobbled DeSean Jackson (who is expected to make his debut against the Browns) and turn around a struggling defense.
