Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett tore his ACL in practice on Monday and the injury will cause him to miss the 2014 season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Dockett injured his right knee and had to be taken off the practice field on a cart. The initial diagnosis didn’t look promising and a MRI revealed the full extent of the damage. The injury is the first significant one Dockett has suffered during his NFL career. He’ll need surgery to repair the torn ligament. His absence this season will leave a considerable hole in Arizona’s defense. Even if he isn’t playing up to the standard he set early in his career, Dockett still anchored the Cardinals defensive line.

Defensive tackle Dan Williams said that Dockett's foot just "got stuck in the ground," while defensive end Calais Campbell said that this is a "tough situation to be in." Campbell said the Cardinals count on Dockett to "be a leader," but that he didn't see the play in which the injury occurred, via a post from Darren Urban on the official website.

Dockett is one of Arizona’s best defensive players and a team leader. He’s entering his 11th season with the Cardinals, never having played for another team. He’s been remarkably healthy throughout his career, missing just two regular season games in 10 years. He played in all 16 games in 2013, recording 46 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
