Ryan Mallett traded to Texans from Patriots, per report
Ryan Mallett is headed to Houston, where he could compete for a starting job against Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Ryan Mallett is headed to the Houston Texans in a trade with the New England Patriots, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The Pats were seemingly shopping Mallett throughout the preseason, but did not find a suitor until late. In exchange for Mallett, the Patriots received a sixth-round draft pick, according to ESPN's Tania Ganguli.
The Texans are arguably one of the most quarterback-needy teams in the league. They won just two games last season, and the struggles of Matt Schaub, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates were blamed for many of their problems. Schaub and Yates are gone, but projected starter Ryan Fitzpatrick hasn't inspired much confidence in preseason. Across three appearances, he went 25-for-43 passing for 232 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Mallett, who attempted just four passes during his three seasons in New England, was once thought to be a first-round talent and was considered a steal when he tumbled to the third round in 2011. The idea was that he would be groomed in the Belichick system and eventually take over for Tom Brady, who turned 37 this August.
That plan changed when the Pats drafted Jimmy Garoppolo, who made Mallett expendable by beating him for the backup quarterback job in training camp. Mallett was mediocre in preseason play, going 14-of-26 for 160 yards and a touchdown in three games. Garoppolo got the start and played the entire way in the final exhibition against the New York Giants on Thursday.
That said, Texans head coach Bill O’Brien knows Mallett well. He was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator when they selected Mallett out of Arkansas in 2011. Despite his struggles, Mallett’s physical potential is evident. He has been praised for arm strength and 6’6 frame. According to Rapoport, the Dallas Cowboys had been in trade talks with the Patriots, as well.
Whether Mallett can present a challenge to Fitzpatrick remains to be seen, but the added competition shouldn't hurt the Texans. At the very least, Mallett may be able to earn a backup spot on the roster. Rookie Tom Savage currently sits behind Fitzpatrick on the depth chart. Keenum is reportedly on his way out the door to make room for Mallett.
Texans have informed QB Case Keenum of his release. He is subject to waivers. Would expect Ravens to be among those interested...
