Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested on Wednesday on aggravated assault allegations, according to azcentral sports. The Cardinals immediately deactivated Dwyer upon learning of the allegations and said they will evaluate the situation as more information becomes available.

According to police, Dwyer was involved in two alleged incidents, both occurring in Arizona in late July. Both incidents involved Dwyer, a 27-year-old woman and their 18-month-old boy, according to the police. The first happened in the morning on July 21 and the second occurred a day later. The woman and the child reportedly left the state shortly after the second incident.

Dwyer was charged with one count of aggravated assault causing a fracture, one count of aggravated assault involving a minor, two counts of criminal damage, one count of preventing the use of a cell phone during an emergency and one count of assault. Phoenix police have been working on the case since Sept. 11. Dwyer admitted to police the incidents occurred, but denied any physical assaults.

Here’s a look at Dwyer’s mugshot:

Dwyer's alleged assault continues a season-long trend that has put the NFL in the news for all the wrong reasons. Recent incidents include new video leaking of Ray Rice knocking his wife unconscious, Texas courts charging Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson for child abuse, the Carolina Panthers bowing to public pressure to suspend defensive end Greg Hardy, and the San Francisco 49ers facing similar opposition for their support of Ray McDonald.

The combination of these stories has shone a spotlight on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has seen prominent media members and women’s advocacy groups call for his resignation. However, Goodell reportedly has no plans to leave his post in the face of criticism.

Dwyer is in his first season with the Cardinals after a four-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 25-year-old had 51 yards on 16 carries through two games this season. He rushed for a career-high 623 yards and two touchdowns in 2012 with Pittsburgh.

Dwyer was a sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech. His status with the team is unclear at this time.
