Drew Stanton will start for Cardinals vs. 49ers

With Carson Palmer out with nerve damage, the Cardinals once again turn to Stanton for a second consecutive week.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Drew Stanton will start at quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 against the visiting San Francisco 49ers, per Matt Maiocco of CSN.

Stanton also started in Week 2 after incumbent starter Carson Palmer sat out with nerve damage in his throwing shoulder. Even with another week off, Palmer said he still hasn't found a treatment that works thus far, per the Cardinals official site:

“I wish I had a concrete answer or somebody knew exactly what to do to wake it up, but that’s not known,” Palmer said. “It’s just time. The only answer is time, and I’m hoping it doesn’t take any more time.”

The Cardinals won last week in Stanton's first start for the team, but the quarterback wasn't exactly the reason for the victory. Stanton completed only 48.3 percent of his attempts going 14 of 29 for 167 yards. Most importantly, he threw zero interceptions and allowed the running game behind Andre Ellington to take over. However, Stanton will need to move the chains for the Cardinals to succeed long term if he remains the starter.

Stanton has appeared in only 13 games in his NFL career, including five starts. Now 30 years old, Stanton has also played for the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts.
