Cut by the St. Louis Rams after becoming the first openly gay man drafted into the NFL, defensive end Michael Sam has signed with the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad.

“We feel like he has a chance to come in at a position that we’ve tried to address and compete for a spot,” he said. “We’ve gotten nothing but good reports. He was a very good player in college, his track record speaks for itself.”

Marc SerotaUPDATE: The Cowboys made it official Wednesday morning, signing Michael Sam to their practice squad.
The Rams selected Sam in the seventh round after he fell down the draft board, having been projected as a third-to-fifth-round pick. Many around the league felt Sam was too slow to play at 3-4 outside linebacker after running a 4.91 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine in February, and too small at 6’2 and 255 pounds to be a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme, viewed as more of a “tweener” without a real fit in an NFL scheme.

It’s a classy statement by Sam, who knows this is not the end of his journey. He must now wait 24 hours to see if another NFL team will add him to their active roster. If no one is interested, Sam knows he is likely to be added to the Rams’ practice squad.
