Andy Dalton returns to Pro Bowl, replaces Aaron Rodgers

With Rodgers abstaining from the Pro Bowl because of a calf injury, the Bengals get another Pro Bowler in the mix.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will not play in Sunday's Pro Bowl because of his calf injury, and will be replaced by Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rodgers has been playing injured for more than a month, limping around the field with a partially torn muscle.

The six original quarterbacks named to the Pro Bowl were Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Tony Romo, and Rodgers. Since being announced, only Luck and Romo are still participating, with Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford and Dalton being named as replacements. No official announcement has been made for Brady's fill-in.

Dalton had a pretty rough year by most standards, the worst since his rookie season. The fourth-year veteran out of TCU threw for 3,398 yards and 19 touchdowns with 17 interceptions. Only Philip Rivers and Jay Cutler tossed more picks than Dalton.

Looking at the statistics, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Ryan Tannehill or Matt Ryan were all better options than Dalton. All of which threw for more yardage, more touchdowns and fewer interceptions.
