NFL admits to clock error at end of Steelers game

Donald Miralle/Getty ImagesThe NFL has released a statement admitting that San Diego’s clock operator made an error Monday night, one which cost the Steelers 18 seconds late in the game.
The statement doesn’t assign all the blame to the game’s clock operator either.

The NFL acknowledged the error Tuesday afternoon.
After the Chargers kicked a late field goal to go up 20-17, they booted the ensuing kickoff into the end zone for a touchback with 2:56 remaining. No time should have run off the clock as a result, but when the Steelers took the first snap of their drive there was 2:38 left on the game clock. The NFL even noted the error in their official play-by-play.

The Steelers found themselves inches from a game-winning touchdown down 20-17 to the Chargers with five seconds left and a timeout. They had one play for the win, and had to hope it didn’t take more than five seconds. They wouldn’t go with anything crazy, right?
NOPE, THEY DID SOMETHING CRAZY. AND IT WORKED:

The Chargers responded with a sober field goal drive that put the pressure back on Vick to produce. Surprisingly, given how the rest of the game played out, he did.

But even if San Diego’s line does struggle in pass coverage against a Steelers front that had five sacks and 10 quarterback hurries a week ago, Rivers should be just fine.
