2016 NFL Draft order: Detroit Lions at No. 1

If the draft happened right now, the Lions would have the top pick. But would they seek a replacement for Matthew Stafford?

Steve Flynn-USA TODAY Sports

We are officially at the midway point of the NFL season, and plenty of teams are already in ruin. Nine teams have two wins or less, and may as well start looking ahead to the 2016 NFL Draft.

Chief among them is the Detroit Lions, current holders of the top overall pick in the draft. Detroit is ahead of the Tennessee Titans solely because they have one more loss. The draft order is based on record and then overall strength of schedule. If those are the same, conference record then division record are used. If all of that is equal, a coin flip takes place at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

The last time the Lions had the No. 1 pick in the draft was 2009 when they selected quarterback Matthew Stafford. Although Stafford was benched for part of a game earlier this season, it's unlikely Detroit will seek his replacement next year. Stafford signed a large contract extension in 2013 that locks him up with Detroit through the 2017 season.

Instead, the Lions could look to upgrade the offensive tackle. Left tackle Riley Reiff, the team's first-round pick in 2012, has one more season left on his contract and could shift to the right side. Or the Lions could simply take a tackle like Notre Dame's Ronnie Stanley or Laremy Tunsil of Ole Miss and move them to the right side.

Current 2016 NFL Draft order (will be updated after Monday night’s game):

1. Detroit Lions: 1-7 (.551 strength of schedule)
