The poor quality of the AFC South is difficult to overstate and were it not for a three-game stretch against the other teams in the division, the Indianapolis Colts could have a worse record than 3-4. Their 0-4 record outside of the AFC South is likely a big reason why experts have little faith in the Colts to upset the undefeated Carolina Panthers.
Colts vs. Panthers 2015 picks and predictions: Experts taking Carolina to stay undefeated
The Colts have struggled in 2015, while the Panthers have rolled to an undefeated record and experts don’t believe that will change in Week 8.
Cam Newton deserves plenty of praise for his play that has led to the undefeated record for the Panthers, but the team is also No. 1 in rushing and No. 6 in points allowed. But after turning the ball over just three times in the first four weeks, Newton had five interceptions in the last two wins.
Avoiding mistakes is the best way to dispatch the Colts who are plenty capable of making their own mistakes. Andrew Luck has nine interceptions in just five starts and has regressed to a 76.3 passer rating after finishing 2014 at 96.5. A loss to the Panthers on Sunday would be the fifth of the season for the Colts, matching the total that Indianapolis finished with in each of the last three seasons with Luck at the helm.
The biggest problem for the Colts has been the defense, though. It enters Week 8 as the NFL’s worst and has given up more than 400 yards of offense in five consecutive games. Keeping the Panthers under that mark is a tall task, but needs to happen if the Colts hope to pull the upset.
At CBS Sports, every panelist believes that it will be the Panthers improving to 7-0, as is the case at ESPN. The sole detractor taking the Colts is Joel Thorman, who believes Indianapolis will be able to pull the upset. The rest of SB Nation's team is going with Carolina.
