Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey was hospitalized after being shot in the head Tuesday night, according to several reports. Bailey underwent several hours of surgery on Wednesday and is now in stable condition:

“We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening,” the Rams said in a statement Tuesday night. “We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more.”

Rapoport reports Bailey was shot twice in the head while sitting in a car with his cousin and two other young relatives. According to Rapoport the driver, Bailey’s cousin, was shot several times shielding the children in the car and did suffer life-threatening injuries. He also underwent surgery and is considered to be in stable but critical condition. NFL.com reports the incident happened in Miami Gardens, Fla. when a car pulled up and started shooting. The shooter is reportedly unknown.

Bailey, who played college football at West Virginia, was selected by the Rams in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He's appeared in 38 games during his career, catching 59 passes for 843 yards and two touchdowns. Bailey is currently serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Bailey was born in Miramar Fla. and played high school football at Miramar High School.
