Tony Romo suffered collarbone fracture, will miss rest of season

Romo left the game in the third quarter and will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a hairline fracture in his collarbone.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will miss the remainder of the season, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed on 105.3 The FAN on Friday, after tests showed a hairline fracture in his collarbone. He will not need to have surgery.

Romo left Thursday's game against the Carolina Panthers in the third quarter after he was sacked by Thomas Davis. Romo was replaced by backup Matt Cassel. It was Romo's second game back from a broken collarbone he suffered in Week 2 that kept him out of seven games. The Cowboys went 0-7 with Romo out and fell to the bottom of the NFC East.

Romo was favoring the shoulder he injured previously, and left to get X-rays on the left collarbone. The Cowboys announced he would not return to the game, and then confirmed that he sustained an injury to the same spot as the Week 2 fracture.

Even before the injury, Romo was struggling on Thursday. He had three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns, and had completed just 11 of 21 passes for 106 yards before he exited. The Cowboys were down 30-6 when Romo left and ended up losing, 33-14.

Against the Panthers, Cassel completed 13 of 19 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. He was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills during Romo’s injury and has completed 63 percent of his passes for 902 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions this season. He replaced Brandon Weeden, who struggled to fill in adequately for Romo.
