Jaguars vs. Jets 2015 picks and predictions: Experts expect New York to roll at home

The Jets are clinging to a playoff spot, and are in danger of their season slip away if they don’t stop their current two-game skid.

If the season ended today, the New York Jets would be in the playoffs as the AFC's sixth seed. Yet the team is hardly playing like postseason contenders right now, having lost back-to-back games after a once-promising 4-1 start. The Jacksonville Jaguars, who enter this weekend fresh off a bye, are looking to build some momentum after a confidence-boosting win over the Bills in Week 7.

Even at 2-5, the Jaguars can't be counted out of the postseason hunt yet. They are just a half-game back of the Colts and Texans in the pitiful AFC South, a historically weak division that could easily end up with a champion that has six or seven wins this season.

With a favorable upcoming schedule, Jacksonville is the favorite to challenge Indianapolis for AFC South title. Football Outsiders gives them a 24.3 percent chance to win the division, better than the combined odds of the Texans (16.7) and Titans (6.4). They also have the easiest remaining slate in the NFL according to opponents' win percentage (.377). After Sunday's game, the Jags face just one more team with a current winning record (Falcons).

The Jets, on the other hand, play in the ultra-tough AFC East and their likely only path to the playoffs is through the wild card. Their current position in the playoff pecking order appears to be on thin ice, however, after getting dismantled by the Raiders last week.

Oakland put up 451 yards of total offense, the most allowed by the Jets in nearly two years. New York also failed to generate a turnover for the second straight game, after ranking third in the NFL with 15 takeaways through the first six weeks. It was easily the Jets’ worst defensive performance in 2015, and an embarrassing effort for a unit that was heralded as one of the league’s best during the first month of the season.

The experts are predicting that coach Todd Bowles can get this Jets team back on track this weekend with a win over the Jaguars. They are heavy favorites according to the guys ESPN, and our crew at SB Nation agrees, with all eight picking the Jets over the Jags on Sunday.
