Drew Brees becomes 4th player in NFL history to hit 60,000 career passing yards

Brees needed 173 yards on Monday to reach the milestone.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees reached a significant milestone on Monday, becoming the fourth player in NFL history to throw for 60,000 career passing yards. Brees needed 173 passing yards against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football and he managed to pass that figure on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks.

Going into Week 15, Brees had completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 3,794 yards with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. He’s been his usual excellent self, though he is on pace for his lowest touchdown total since 2007 due to the lack of productive offensive weapons and overall struggles by the Saints.

Brees has also missed time due to injury for the first time since 2009. Still, while the Saints are not going to make the postseason this year, Brees has put up the yardage with Cooks as his top receiving target and a lacking running game featuring Mark Ingram.

Brees has thrown for 4,000 yards in each of his past nine seasons in the league. Going into Monday’s game, he needed 206 yards to extend his NFL record streak of consecutive 4,000-yard seasons to 10. No other quarterback in NFL history has thrown more than six in a row.

Brees is fourth in league history in career passing yards behind Peyton Manning (71,871), Brett Favre (71,838) and Dan Marino (61,361). Manning passed Favre this season before going down with an injury. Marino is now within striking distance for Brees. The next active player on the list, Tom Brady, is just behind Brees with 57,663 yards.
