Packers GM Ted Thompson plays coy about Randall Cobb’s free agency

Thompson spoke with reporters Thursday about the plan for Cobb in relation to free agency.

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson took to the podium at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and spoke on a litany of topics, including the pending free agency of receiver Randall Cobb.

Thompson was matter-of-fact when asked about his interest in retaining Cobb, saying “We’d like to re-sign all of our players, so sure.” Thompson then spoke about cap space, adding that “It doesn’t mean we’re going to roll over money every year. We’re going run our business the way we think it should be run”

Cobb, a fourth-year pro who is coming off his best season, has recently been reported as wanting $9 million per year on his next contract. Last year, Cobb posted 91 catches for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns, all career-highs. Green Bay is currently projected to have $23.73 million in cap space if the threshold is $140 million, according to Over The Cap. Cobb and right tackle Bryan Bulaga are the two main free agents for Thompson, and neither is expected to be slapped with the franchise tag.

SB Nation presents: How to make the combine more entertaining

Should Green Bay sign Cobb in the ballpark of his demands, it will be committing a large chunk of its cap to receivers. Last year, Thompson inked Jordy Nelson to a deal of four years and $39 million. Nelson's cap hit this season is $9.2 million and decreases every season after. If Cobb and the Packers can't come to a deal, Devante Adams would become the second banana in the offense to Nelson.
