Jameis Winston has run into his first bump at the NFL Scouting Combine. Winston is experiencing “weakness in his throwing shoulder,” according to a report by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

However, the former Florida State quarterback may still participate in the throwing drills at the combine.

To figure out the source of the problem, the former Florida State quarterback has undergone an electromyography on the affected shoulder. Shoulder weakness or “dead arm” isn’t common among quarterbacks, but it is a regular occurrence for baseball pitchers. Though best known for his football work, Winston also plays baseball for the Seminoles, splitting time between the outfield and the pitcher’s mound.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the doctors at the combine believe Winston’s issues are nerve related. However, the condition isn’t considered serious and he will not need treatment.
“This is a surprise,” said Winston’s private quarterback tutor George Whitfield Jr. “He pitched all his life and never had any issues. He never had any surgeries. It’s probably some observation. He threw at the University of Michigan. I don’t know what part or whatever. I know he’s been working fine and playing fine. I’m sure they’re just making observations, because from a physical standpoint, he’s been doing everything. It’s actually kind of a shock.”

The news comes shortly after concerns were raised about Winston’s conditioning. Last week, an unflattering picture showing the quarterback working out made the rounds on the Internet. However, Whitfield Jr. revealed that the photo was outdated, and the signal caller had lost 12–15 pounds since it was taken. At the combine, Winston weighed in at 231 pounds.
Though the shoulder weakness will prevent Winston from taking part in the bench press, he still plans to participate in the throwing drills.
