Bears not trading Jay Cutler, ‘moving forward’ with him as the starting QB

Cutler will remain in Chicago for the foreseeable future, according to the Bears general manager.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Since arriving in Chicago, Bears general manager Ryan Pace has sidestepped questions regarding Jay Cutler's future with the organization. That finally changed Wednesday when Pace committed to the embattled quarterback, per Pro Football Talk.

“We’re moving forward with Jay Cutler as our starting quarterback,” Pace said, ending months of speculation about the team’s plans. Chicago had hosted several quarterbacks so far this offseason, including former Bear Josh McCown and NFC North veteran Shaun Hill. Both were starters for their respective teams last season, and the Bears’ interest suggested to some that Cutler’s days in the Windy City were numbered.

Cutler is entering the second season of a seven-year deal he signed before 2014. Assuming the Bears don’t have a change of heart in the next 24 hours and move him, $10 million of his 2016 salary becomes fully guaranteed. As such, Cutler may not just be Chicago’s starting quarterback for this season, but the next one as well.

Cutler completed a career-high 66 percent of his passes in 2014. He also fumbled 12 times and threw for a league-high 18 interceptions. Cutler is the franchise leader in passing yards with 18,725.
