Jeff Fisher says Rams plan to take a quarterback in 2015 NFL Draft

St. Louis’ head coach suggests Nick Foles may not be the long-term answer under center.

The St. Louis Rams made a headline grabbing trade earlier this offseason, sending former starting quarterback Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles along with draft pick consideration. While Foles is expected to step in for St. Louis under center, head coach Jeff Fisher revealed that the team still plans to take a new signal caller in the draft, according to NFL.com.

“It’s our intention to draft [a quarterback],” Fisher said during the annual NFL owners meeting this week. “The Nick trade has no bearing over what we do in the draft.”

Since the days of Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger, the quarterback position has been the Achilles heel for the Rams. Bradford was supposed to solve those issues, but he struggled with consistency, the deep ball and injuries. Foles doesn't have a completely clean record either, having missed roughly half the 2014 season with a broken collarbone. He also tossed five times as many interceptions last season as he did during his breakout 2013 campaign despite playing in five fewer games. As a result, the Rams may feel that their quarterback of the future is currently not on their roster.

However, St. Louis may not be in position to land one of the draft’s top signal callers. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are expected to come off the board within the first few selections, well before the Rams’ pick at No. 10 overall. That could mean they plan to trade up to take their quarterback or the team has its eyes on other prospects, such as Baylor’s Bryce Petty or UCLA’s Brett Hundley. Perhaps Fisher’s QB talk is simply a smokescreen to confuse other teams.

Either way, the fact that the head coach of St. Louis somewhat dismissed Foles as a long-term solution suggests that there’s more than a little truth to his claims.
