The extension comes one day before the start of the NFL's legal tampering period that precedes free agency. Paul's market improved after the Miami Dolphins placed the transition tag on Charles Clay, a similar type of player. Teams that missed out on tight ends Julius Thomas or Jordan Cameron would have likely shifted their attention to Paul.
Paul joined Washington in 2011 as a wide receiver from Nebraska. The team worked with him to reshape his body, eventually emerging as a 6'1", 241-pound H-back that is well suited to head coach Jay Gruden's offense. Paul caught 39 passes for 507 yards last season, more than his previous three years combined. The move keeps together Washington's one-two punch of Paul and Jordan Reed at tight end.
