Shane Ray's recent drug citation didn't deter the Broncos from trading up to draft him in the first round. The Broncos swapped spots with the Detroit Lions, moving up to No. 23, to bag the play-making defensive end out of Missouri.

Denver gave up a trio of picks and OL Manny Ramirez in exchange for the rights to the Missouri defensive standout.


To do so, the Broncos shipped the Lions the No. 28 overall pick, a fifth-round pick (No. 143), a 2016 fifth round pick and veteran offensive lineman Manny Ramirez.
Detroit used the 28th pick to draft Duke offensive guard Laken Tomlinson.
It’s not exactly a shock that Detroit made the move: general manager Martin Mayhew has traded a draft trick every year since he took over in 2009. The deal with the Broncos has been in place since Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Scheffer.
Just three days ago, Ray, the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2014, was cited for possession of marijuana after being pulled over in Missouri. The incident wasn’t expected to drop him out of the first round.
