DEL RIGHTO: You may remember Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio from such motivational gimmicks as “keep chopping wood,“ the 2003 slogan he affixed to the Jaguars that got the team’s punter gashed with an axe in the locker room. Imagine the surprise, then, hearing his very rational opinion about DeflateGate: ”an overreaction.”
Rise ‘n Grind: Jack Del Rio said something wise about DeflateGate
Woah, he’s right.
OWNERS MEETINGS: The NFL owners are getting together this week in San Francisco, ostensibly to vote on changing the extra point and two-point conversion. Of course, there’s the little matter of how former BFFs Robert Kraft and Roger Goodell will act when forced into the same room together. They’ll also consider changing how game balls are handled ... probably a good idea.
STADIUM TALK: Nobody’s voting on any stadiums or relocation plans this week, but owners for the Chargers, Raiders and Rams will update the league on their own stadium situations, with Rams owner Stan Kroenke expected to make his case (again) for relocating to Inglewood. The stadium situation in Oakland is looking dire again too, and the league is getting the results of a market survey conducted in all three earlier this spring.
MORE STADIUM TALK: The Vikings’ new home gets more expensive every day, and that means noted real estate scammer Zygi Wilf is having to kick in more of his hard-earned scrilla to pay for it.
TRUE GENTLEMAN: Cam Newton picked up and carried a woman across the mud at the Preakness Stakes this weekend.
THROWBACKS: Are the Buccaneers going to be wearing their old-school orange jerseys again this season? They should, if for no other reason than to get rid of the terrible digital clock numbers on their current threads.
ELITE ALEX: Someone made a list of the league’s top 10 quarterbacks and accidentally intentionally included Alex Smith.
CONTRACT TALKS: What should we make of the lack of action between Russell Wilson and the Seahawks?
FIND THE FIT: How does newly acquired cornerback Kyle Arrington change the Ravens’ secondary?
NEW RIVALS: With the 49ers on the skids, the Cardinals are going to have to intensify their rivalry with the Seahawks this year. Tyrann Mathieu is getting a head start on that.
TOO LITTLE TOO LATE: Wheelin’ and dealin’ Chip Kelly actually turned down a trade in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The Broncos wanted to swap picks and move up to No. 20, but Kelly wanted wide receiver Nelson Agholor.
ON A MISSION: Colts pass rusher Robert Mathis says he’s “on a mission to prove himself” this year. But how much can the Colts count on the 34-year-old?
FORTUNATE SON: Guess who’s trying out for the Chiefs? Sting’s son. No, not the guy from The Police, the wrestler.
