NFL Draft results 2015: Jay Ajayi taken by Dolphins in 5th round

The Miami Dolphins landed Jay Ajayi in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Boise State running back Jay Ajayi has been selected by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 149 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, giving them a versatile, powerful rusher to complement their ground attack.

Ajayi was Mr. Do-It-All for the Broncos, becoming the first player in FBS history with 1,800 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in a single season. Equally adept at catching passes in the flat and pounding out tough yards between the tackles, he leaves Boise as the Broncos’ all-time single-season leader in yards and touchdowns. Ajayi, born in England to Nigerian parents, nearly picked soccer over football, and his quick feet and fluid athleticism show glimpses of his days on the pitch. He might not have elite straight-line speed (4.57 40-yard dash), but both of his shuttle times ranked top five among running backs at the NFL Combine.

But don’t let that talk of fancy feet fool you; the 6-foot, 221-pound Ajayi is capable of being a physical, downhill grinder. He runs with good pad level and excellent balance, drawing comparisons to Marshawn Lynch. He’s also proven his durability, tallying more than 28 touches per game in 2014 -- though that type of collegiate workload could also raise red flags for his longevity at the next level. The only other real concern is Ajayi’s ball security -- he fumbled 12 times during his three-year college career.

There were several big-name runners nabbed above Ajayi, but in what many consider to be the best running back crop in the last few years, the Boise State product may be the most complete back of the bunch.
