NFL Draft results 2015: Michael Bennett taken by Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars took Michael Bennett in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Ohio State defensive tackle Michael Bennett will join Jacksonville Jaguars after being taken with the No. 180 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The 6’2, 293-pound defensive lineman is known for his range, quickness and sound technical skills.

In 2014, he had just 35 tackles and six sacks, adding to a 2013 season that found him picking up 44 tackles, of which 11.5 were for a loss, and 7.5 sacks. He was a third-team All-American selection in 2014 and a two-time second-team Big Ten selection in 2013 and 2014.

Although Bennett’s strength was considered one of his weak points, he showcased his speed as his biggest asset throughout his four years with the Buckeyes. Bennett has recorded 40-yard dash times that range between 4.95 and 5.15, but an injury kept him from being able to participate in the NFL Combine. He did record a 4.98 in the 40 at Ohio State’s pro day, but had to withdraw from the remainder of the workouts due to a hamstring injury.

Scouts have noted he doesn’t have the ability to simply throw a blocker out of his way, but Bennett’s speed and quickness off the ball allow him to shoot gaps well to simply beat blocks before they can be established.
