Rise ‘n Grind: The NFL is changing
Rules changes, legal fights and lots more offseason fun!

RULE CHANGE: For the first time in more than 20 years, the NFL has made a slight change to how the game is scored. Extra point attempts will now be a 33-yard kick, with the ball moving back to the 15-yard line from the 2-yard line where kickers made more 99 percent of all attempts. The two-point conversion will stay at the 2-yard line, because some of the league’s hard liners don’t want teams with athletic quarterbacks to have an advantage, seriously. The most exciting change to the process is making it a live ball on extra point and two-point attempts, giving the defense a chance to make something out of a turnover.
RELUCTANT ACCEPTANCE: The DeflateGate fight is over for Bob Kraft. A very disappointed Patriots owner gave up the fight, announcing at yesterday’s owners meeting that he would not pursue an appeal of the sanctions leveled on his team by Roger Goodell. Pats Pulpit makes a good case for why Kraft had to give up the fight.
NO MORE ROGER: Meanwhile, the NFLPA is most definitely not giving up its fight. The union sent a formal request for Roger Goodell to recuse himself and appoint a neutral third party to decide Tom Brady’s appeal. Ol’ Rog isn’t likely to let that happen.
MORE LEGAL MOVES: The players union fired off another shot across the league’s bow. They want Goodell and the league itself held in contempt of court for ignoring a federal court’s decision in the Adrian Peterson case.
CARR INJURED: Raider Nation is holding its breath this morning awaiting news on the status of quarterback Derek Carr. He hasn’t been practicing during OTAs this week because of an injury. It sounds like a minor thing, but it’s still not clear. Teams do not have to disclose players’ injury status during the offseason ... and they usually don’t.
RAIDER STADIUM ISSUE: Raiders owner Mark Davis made it clear on Tuesday that he has no intention of selling his team or moving the franchise to St. Louis or even sharing a stadium in Santa Clara with the 49ers. He says he still wants to get a deal done that would keep the team in Oakland, but he is leaving open the possibility of moving to L.A.
ELITE NUMBERS: Some think Joe Flacco has a chance for 4,000 passing yards this season. Would that make him elite?
ADDITION: The Steelers added former Michigan QB Devin Gardner to the roster. The best free agent move of the month was the Chargers’ addition of offensive tackle Joe Barksdale. That’s going to be a very good offensive line in San Diego.
SKIP IT: The Jets will not have Mo Wilkerson at OTAs. He’s skipping them.
TITAN FAIL: Come on, you knew the Tennessee Titans’ sell out streak was bogus. Now we know why. The team sold tickets to a scalper and then wrote it off as a donation to the military.
