FOOTBALL IS BACK, KIND OF: Johnny Manziel ran one in for a touchdown. Tom Brady played football and the crowd went wild. The NFL preseason kicked off on Thursday night with six games. Get scores, highlights and injury news right here.
Is Johnny Manziel ready to be the Browns starter yet?
Maybe! He had a good night of preseason play on Thursday. Let’s get you up to speed on Thursday’s preseason winners and losers along with some other very important NFL things to know.

THOSE BROWNS QUARTERBACKS: Johnny Manziel showed plenty of improvement last night, poise, awareness ... but Josh McCown still has a tight grip on the starting job.
REAL WINNER: Philip Rivers stole the show last night with one weird look at Jerry Jones.
WASHINGTON TIGHT ENDS: Washington took the biggest hit on the injury front, losing tight end Niles Paul for the season.
RUNNING BACKS TO KNOW: Everyone’s buzzing about Lions running back Ameer Abdullah who stole the show with a bag full of sweet jukes and raw speed for 67 yards on just seven carries. Seriously though, look at these highlights. Speaking of running back hype, Jonas Gray of the Patriots had a great night, too, with this 55-yard touchdown.
BULL MARKET FOR THE BEARS: The question I get asked more than any other is if the Bears are going to be better this year. Last night suggests that the will be. Alshon Jeffery is dealing with a day-to-day calf injury.
EAT IT: J.J. Watt eats 9,000 calories every day. In fact, he might be responsible for the avocado shortage.
DEFLATEGATE STILL: Yes, it’s still going on, and it’s hard to expect a settlement to happen as long as the NFL wants Tom Brady to commit perjury.
HOT LISTEN: The Onside Kick Family Hour, the greatest NFL podcast on the internet, returns this week, and we’ve got a complete look at who and what we’re watching for the preseason ... and lots more.
BEER NEWS: The Bills are making a fancy beer with a local microbrewery.
HOLDOUT: Kam Chancellor was under the impression that the Seahawks were going to give him a new deal.
JETS NEWS: The Jets’ preseason didn’t get any easier last night.
NEXT GREAT BADGER: Wisconsin has been churning out top flight running backs for the NFL, and that’s probably going to continue in 2016. Mocking the draft has a look at the names to know in the Big Ten West.
