The Dallas Cowboys’ defense takes a hit

Another big injury with the potential to shape the standings this year rocked the NFL on Tuesday when Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick tore his ACL. Plus, there were a whole bunch of free agent signings, people are mad at bad quarterbacks and lots more.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

COWBOYS LOSE SCANDRICK: The Dallas defense suffered a huge loss Tuesday evening when cornerback Orlando Scandrick tore his ACL in practice. Scandrick was Dallas’ best defensive back last season, not allowing a single touchdown to receivers he covered.

SPOTLIGHT ON MR. JONES: The news means the Cowboys will be forced to rely heavily on rookie Byron Jones, their first-round pick this year, alongside Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne, who's working his way back from a torn patellar tendon. Jones battled shoulder injuries in college and suffered one in training camp this year.

STEELERS SIGN VICK: Michael Vick is a Steeler now. Pittsburgh signed the veteran quarterback on Tuesday. Fan reaction to the team's new backup quarterback was decidedly mixed.

BRONCOS SIGN MATHIS: Denver brought in some help for its shaky offensive line, signing former Eagles guard Evan Mathis to an incentive-laden $4 million deal. He's essentially a replacement for departed free agent Orlando Franklin, and, if he can stay healthy, is a nice addition for Gary Kubiak's zone blocking scheme.

RAMS OWNER ROASTED: Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck, a St. Louis native, went on a Twitter rampage Tuesday ripping Rams owner Stan Kroenke for the way he's treated fans in the Gateway City and for making it clear that he plans on moving the Rams to Los Angeles.

OVERPAID QUARTERBACKS: Don't bother Seahawks pass rusher Michael Bennett with the latest news about "mediocre" quarterbacks getting paid. It makes him mad.

THE JOURNEYMEN: Speaking of mediocre quarterbacks, the league is full of them, and these are the seven most unkillable journeymen quarterbacks.

FALCON QUEST: The combination of head coach Dan Quinn and first-round draft pick Vic Beasley Jr., gives the Falcons something they’ve been lacking: an identity. Atlanta’s banking on those two to become the cornerstones of a dynasty.

HARD KNOCKS RECAP: The third episode of Hard Knocks started with a barrage of F-bombs from J.J. Watt and didn’t let up for the next hour.

GOOD ENOUGH: We now know just how good Tim Tebow is. Good enough to be a third-string QB.

MAYS TO OAKLAND: The Raiders signed wayward safety Taylor Mays on Tuesday. It’s his third team of the offseason.

INJURY FREE: The NFC East is banged up already, except for the Eagles.

PATRIOTS TRADE: New England made a deal yesterday, swapping a future draft pick with the Lions to get offensive tackle Mike Williams.

NFL MONEYBALL: The Seattle Seahawks have found a market inefficiency to exploit among their late-round draft picks, and it’s why they keep getting such good cornerbacks while the rest of the league struggles.

DAMAGE REPORT: Training camp and preseason injuries have been piling up. Bill Barnwell at Grantland explores which teams have been hurt most because of the players lost.
