As teams inch closer to the regular season, getting momentum is increasingly important. When the Jacksonville Jaguars host the Detroit Lions on Friday night, both teams will be looking to bounce back from subpar outings last week. They each won their first preseason game at home, only to follow them with losses on the road. The Week 3 preseason game has major implications for roster spots and will be a big test for both teams.

Week 3 of the preseason is here, with the Lions and Jaguars both looking to rebound from losses last week.

Quarterback Blake Bortles is coming off a promising rookie year with the Jags, amassing 2,908 yards through the air and 11 touchdowns -- though he also tossed 17 interceptions and went just 3-10 as the starter. Heading into his second year in the league, Bortles has looked decent thus far in the preseason. He's completed 19 of 31 passes for 216 yards and rushed for one touchdown.
Bortles can still go either way at this stage. The Jaguars hope he can be their franchise quarterback, but he has a long way to go before he reaches that status. Fortunately, the Jaguars seem focused on giving him as much help as possible, bringing on Greg Olson as offensive coordinator and star tight end Julius Thomas this offseason. The Jaguars will want to see how Bortles works in extended time with the starters in the all-important third preseason game.
Jaguars rookie running back T.J. Yeldon, who was sidelined with a finger injury, should play against Detroit in his first preseason action. Yeldon will still wear a splint on his injured finger, but he was finally able to ditch his red "non-contact" jersey during practice earlier in the week. Yeldon is part of one of the most impressive running back classes we've seen in years, and he will be out to prove to the Jaguars that he's the best of the bunch.
On the other sideline, Lions rookie rusher Ameer Abdullah will be trying to do the same. Abdullah stole the show in Detroit's first preseason game, but he saw limited action last week. Against the Jaguars, he'll likely earn plenty of reps.
The Jaguars' defensive backs are getting press this preseason after a strong showing against the New York Giants' offense in Week 2. Giants receiver Victor Cruz claimed that safeties Craig Loston and Sergio Brown were targeting second-year WR Odell Beckham Jr., but regardless, they shut Beckham down -- and that's not easy to do. These two safeties could be a surprising issue for a veteran Lions group that includes Corey Fuller, Jeremy Ross and Golden Tate. However, Detroit's top receiver, Calvin Johnson, is not expected to play.
The Lions traded offensive tackle Michael Williams to the New England Patriots earlier this week, which leaves the depth chart light at that position. Tackle LaAdrian Waddle was taken off the PUP list on Sunday, so he will likely be ready to go by the start of the season, even if he isn't ready to face off against Jacksonville.
With several young players out on the field Friday night, both the Lions and Jaguars should be able to start finalizing their depth chart ahead of the first round of roster cuts due Sept. 1.
