The New York Jets head into the game against the New York Giants on Saturday night needing to give quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick as much time as possible with the first team offense. After only playing one series in the opener against Detroit, he couldn't get a first down against Atlanta until the Falcons had pulled their starting defense.

The Jets were behind 14-0 in the first quarter, but rallied to beat Atlanta 30-22. Now they face the Giants in the MetLife Bowl.
Fitzpatrick will now get plenty of time in the third preseason game, and his play will be heavily scrutinized. The third preseason game is always the most important one, in which starters typically see the most playing time. Just a couple of weeks ago, Fitzpatrick wasn’t even the starter, but with Geno Smith’s injury forcing him out for a portion of the regular season, Fitzpatrick will likely play a half or more on Saturday.
The Jets have struggled on offense thus far, and things haven't been any better on the other side of the ball. Matt Ryan torched the Jets' defensive starters in much the same way that Matt Stafford had done a week earlier when the Jets lost to the Lions. In four possessions against starters, the first-team defense has now given up three touchdowns and a field goal.
For the Giants, the MetLife Bowl will be their best chance to find out if controversial safety Brandon Meriweather can help the team. Meriweather has been fined and suspended multiple times in his career for helmet-to-helmet hits, but he is a low-risk gamble since the contract he signed doesn't include a dollar of guaranteed money. If he even approaches starting caliber with the Giants, then he's bound to make the team given the state of the safety position.
Even though Meriweather missed the end of last season with a toe injury, the Giants took a chance and made him a late signing to try to shore up their secondary. Free safety Landon Collins is out with a knee injury sustained in the preseason opener, while rookie Mykkele Thompson is out for the year with an ankle injury. At this point, the Giants are far beyond "dangerously thin" at safety, though, after season-ending injuries to Bennett Jackson and Justin Currie, and the likely season-ending surgery Nat Berhe will have to undergo on his calf.
The Giants also need to find out if offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz can bounce back from last year's broken ankle to help at either right guard or right tackle. If Schwartz is healthy and can play guard -- his best position -- while rookie Ereck Flowers steps right in at left tackle, then Eli Manning might get his best protection in years.
Manning has struggled big time in his limited time thus far. He completed 4 of 14 passes for 46 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars and 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. The preseason doesn't really matter to a guy like Manning, but he'll definitely want to turn things around sooner rather than later --especially since he's the quarterback most likely to net a big contract extension next.
