Kam Chancellor won’t be back for Week 2 despite Seahawks’ struggles on defense

The Seahawks safety isn’t ending his holdout despite Seattle’s loss to St. Louis in Week 1.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Kam Chancellor probably watched the Seattle Seahawks defense struggle without him in a 34-31 overtime loss to the St. Louis Rams. It wasn't enough to bring him back, though. Chancellor's holdout will continue through Seattle's visit to Lambeau Field this weekend in an NFC Championship rematch, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Observers wondered if the Seahawks’ issues in Week 1 would encourage Chancellor to hurry back before his teammates got too far out of contention, or if he would realize that Seattle struggling without him gave him even more leverage with Seahawks management.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was asked on his Monday radio show if he thought the loss would change the situation.

“No, I mean, there is not much going on right now,” he said. “It’s pretty quiet.”

The problems for the Seahawks go beyond Chancellor's skills as a safety -- he has also served as an unofficial coach on the field for the Seattle defense, helping get his teammates into the right position and making scheme adjustments. He is also one of the team's inspirational leaders, even for members of the offense such as Marshawn Lynch.

If Chancellor does miss the Green Bay game, he’ll forfeit another game check of $267,941.17 and lose another chunk of his signing bonus, bringing his total losses to approximately $2.2 million. According to Rapoport, the teams are less than a million dollars apart on an agreement, but Chancellor also wants his fines erased, something the Seahawks have not been willing to do.

Even with Chancellor, the Seattle defense would have a tough task on the road against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers on Sunday night. But it’s a considerably tougher game without him.
