Cutting Fred Jackson could haunt the Buffalo Bills

There’s controversy in Buffalo over the decision to release beloved Fred Jackson, and it poses very serious questions about the team’s leadership. Elsewhere, more money for Brown, the best of “Hard Knocks”, a slow start in St. Louis and more.

TROUBLE IN BUFFALO: After the Bills cut Fred Jackson on Monday, the veteran running back took a shot at GM Doug Whaley on his way out of town. Now, there are reports suggesting that Whaley cut Jackson without approval from ownership or anyone else in the front office. It’s a bad omen for the Rex Ryan/Whaley relationship in Buffalo, says Robert Klemko.

JACKSON IN SEATTLE: Fred Jackson won’t be a free agent very long. The Seahawks have already taken a meeting with him.

BONUS MONEY: The Steelers didn’t give Antonio Brown a new contract, but they did find a way to get him more money this season.

WHERE IT WENT WRONG: Take a trip back to 2012, when things first started to sour between RG3 and Washington.

HARD KNOCKS: Ryan Mallett overslept, and it we all learned a lesson about why you shouldn’t do that ... Nobody can pull off overalls and cowboys boots (and nothing else) quite like Vince Wilfork ... Watch Bill O’Brien flipping someone off.

INFOMERCIAL: Marshawn Lynch was on TV selling Skittles in an infomercial. Watch him in action.

TO PLEASE THE NFL: A dive through the hacked Sony emails suggests that the people who made the upcoming Will Smith movie Concussion toned it down in a few spots so as not to upset the NFL. The director says they compromised nothing.

TEBOW TRYOUT: We’re very close to Tim Tebow’s NFL return. All he needs to do is beat out Matt Barkley this week.

SLOW START IN ST. LOUIS: The Rams under Jeff Fisher don’t seem to be taking the preseason very seriously, and that has some people wondering if that will lead to another slow start.

COWBOYS BACKFIELD: Did the Cowboys tip their hand at how they plan to distribute carries among their running backs this season?

JONES TO IR: The Colts are reportedly pondering whether or not to put Arthur Jones on injured reserve with the designation to return.

SURPRISE CUT: Another surprise cut this week, the Browns released veteran defensive tackle Phil Taylor.

RUSHING ATTACK: Keep an eye on Detroit’s running game. The Lions could be a big play machine with their running backs this season.

TIME TO STEP IN: Should the NFL do something about the perpetual state of dysfunction plaguing the Washington football team since Dan Snyder bought it? Maybe not, but you should definitely read this piece at Grantland on the NFL’s worst franchise.
