Terrelle Pryor makes Browns’ final roster

Terrelle Pryor survived the final wave of roster cuts on Saturday and has earned a spot on the Cleveland Browns’ roster as a wide receiver, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Pryor looked to be on track to make the team during the early part of training camp before injuring his hamstring in the first week of August. He was held out of the first three preseason games but was able to play in the finale on Thursday night, though he admitted he wasn’t 100 percent heading into the game.

Surprisingly, Pryor didn’t see any passes thrown his way in the game, but he did take a shotgun snap at quarterback, and had two rushes for 9 yards.

Pryor had received a ton of praise from coaches and teammates for his work ethic and incredible athletic talent this summer. He flashed a potential as a receiver during his limited practice time and cornerback Joe Haden even compared him to Calvin Johnson. Coach Mike Pettine also was among those impressed with Pryor’s raw skills and upside, noting that “he doesn’t look out of place.“

Among the likely reasons that Pryor made the team is the Browns’ lack of playmakers and their limited depth at wideout. Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline are fine possession receivers, but lack the explosiveness and speed to be true vertical threats in the passing game.

Pryor also could be valuable as an emergency quarterback. Connor Shaw was placed on injured reserve with a broken thumb, Johnny Manziel has been limited with elbow soreness and Thad Lewis was released, leaving Josh McCown as the only healthy quarterback on the Browns’ active roster.

This decision by the Browns to keep Pryor on the team caps off his remarkable story of making the rare transition from quarterback to receiver at the NFL level.

Pryor spent the first three seasons of his NFL career as a quarterback after being drafted by the Oakland Raiders out of Ohio State in the 2011 Supplemental Draft. He started 10 games for the Raiders but never was able to put it all together as NFL-caliber quarterback, completing just 56 percent of his passes with a career passer rating of 69.3.

Oakland traded Pryor to the Seattle Seahawks following the 2013 season and he bounced around the league last year, not making any team’s active roster. He was released by the Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals and his future as an pro quarterback looked bleak.

Pryor finally decided this summer to make the transition to wide receiver with the hope of reviving his NFL career and the Browns picked him up off waivers in June.
