Muhammad Wilkerson breaks leg in Jets’ final game of the season

Wilkerson will have the whole offseason to rehab the injury.

A leg injury for New York Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson ended his day and his season after he was carted to the locker room and ruled doubtful to return to the game by the team. He did not return to the game, and head coach Todd Bowles announced he sustained a broken leg after the game, a loss for the Jets that eliminated them from the postseason.

Wilkerson, 26, leads the Jets with 12 sacks, more than double any other player on the team, and he is due to become a free agent in the offseason. A first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Wilkerson has made 75 starts in five seasons for the Jets and is one of the best players on the No. 6 ranked defense of the Jets.

The Jets have plenty of talented defensive linemen after drafting Leonard Williams in the 2015 NFL Draft, adding the rookie to a defensive line that already featured Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson.

Since they have been eliminated from the postseason after a loss on Sunday, the Jets don’t have to worry about losing Wilkerson for the playoffs. But now he’ll have to spend a portion of his offseason rehabbing this injury.
