Dolphins and Titans not forced to move game by Hurricane Matthew

The two teams will play in South Florida as scheduled.

The Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans will not relocate their game Sunday and will play in South Florida as scheduled, the NFL announced Friday, despite the impact of Hurricane Matthew.

“Game will be played,” the NFL said in a statement, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “Consensus from state, local and federal officials is Miami is safe and equipped to put on the game and it would not draw resources away from other needs.”

Hurricane Matthew reached Florida Thursday as a Category 4 storm with wind gusts up to 120 miles per hour before dropping to a Category 3 storm Friday morning. It devastated the islands of Haiti and Cuba earlier this week, bringing sustained winds of 125 miles per hour and at least 40 inches of rain. The Dolphins recently upgraded Hard Rock Stadium so it could better withstand major storms, and the NFL is confident the stadium will be a safe place to play on Sunday.

There was talk earlier in the week that the NFL could consider moving the game to Nashville if the damage of the storm was considered too severe.

Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said his team was prepared for a possible relocation. “If we need to make any changes, there’s plans in place already,” he said to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. “We had discussions before we took off for summer break, we had discussions after we got back, as far as certain situations of what we would do. We went to the extent if we ever had to go somewhere else, if we had to leave early in a week. We have protocols that we have in place. It’s just now kind of a wait and see for us.”

A number of college football games in the area have been rescheduled or postponed. The last time severe weather forced an NFL game to be moved was when a snowstorm in the Buffalo area demanded the New York JetsBills game be moved to Ford Field in Detroit.
