Before the game
The Packers and Eagles each need a Week 12 win to boost their flagging playoff hopes. One team will stay afloat when these two storied franchises meet on Monday Night Football.
Green Bay started its season 4-2 before an ineffective defense pushed the team to the back of the NFC North standings. The Packers have lost four straight games while giving up more than 38 points per contest in that stretch. In their last three, they’ve allowed opposing passers to post a 126.1 quarterback rating — easily the worst mark in the league. For comparison’s sake, Tom Brady currently holds the NFL’s highest QB rating at 116.7.
The Packers are making opposing passers look legendary, and that means Aaron Rodgers can’t win no matter how well he plays. The former NFL MVP has thrown for 1,019 yards and eight touchdowns in his last three games. His team has lost by an average margin of 15 points in that span.
Philadelphia will have a chance to capitalize, though it’s dealing with some slump issues of its own. The Eagles started 3-0 but are just 2-5 since, ceding the top spot in the NFC East and fading out of the postseason picture as a result. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz has cooled from an eye-opening start, but his wideouts have given him few opportunities to succeed in recent weeks. Philly’s receivers have dropped nearly 5 percent of passes thrown their way this fall.
On Monday, a stoppable force will collide with a movable object when the Eagles receiving corps faces off with the Packers secondary. Green Bay has struggled to keep its cornerbacks on the field and got more bad news when veteran starter Sam Shields was ruled out for the season. Philadelphia will rely on Jordan Matthews as its top target, but the young standout has dropped more passes than all but four other players this season.
One embattled unit will get a boost in Week 12, and the winner will keep its postseason hopes alive. The loser will get a chance to start planning some early January vacation time.
