Peyton Manning’s past is back to haunt him

The Broncos quarterback had probably imagined a spring victory lap for his career. Instead, the world is focused on the details of an ugly incident from his college playing days.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Peyton Manning’s still dominating the headlines, but it has nothing to do with his second Super Bowl win. On Saturday, Shaun King of the New York Daily News published a 74-page document from a 2002 defamation suit by Dr. Jamie Naughright stemming from a 1996 incident at Tennessee when Manning allegedly rubbed his rectum and scrotum on Naughright’s face during an examination.

Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated has produced separate documents from the case, from Manning’s side, that present a slightly different picture of the 1996 incident, specifically that no contact occurred. What remains to be seen is which shoe drops next.

On Twitter, King suggested that the sealed documents involving another incident with Manning and Naughright from 1994, an incident King characterized as “deep & ugly,” could be released. There’s also the question of whether or not Naughright will revisit the incident by coming forward to talk directly to the media, something multiple outlets are doubtlessly trying to convince her to do right now.

It’s a complicated case, and the nature of it makes it unlikely that Manning will find himself embroiled in new legal action over it. However, it is the kind of thing that could stick around the news cycle awhile, which is something Manning would probably like to avoid.

HOW TMZ GOT THE RICE VIDEO: TMZ nearly took down the NFL for a mere $100,000. Ever wonder how TMZ gets stuff like the Ray Rice video tape? The New Yorker has a profile of the site and its founder which reveals some more information about the scandal that nearly broke the NFL.

MOCK DRAFT MONDAY: It’s Monday, so that means draft guru Dan Kadar has his latest mock out ... this one has trades!

DENVER’S CONTRACT DANCE: Broncos put Osweiler talks on hold until Manning makes a decision. The quicker Manning makes his decision the better. Meanwhile, the Broncos are talking contract with Malik Jackson, but you wonder just how long they can afford to wait to talk to Brock Osweiler, especially with the Browns reportedly interested in him.

JEFFERY IN DEMAND: What if Alshon Jeffery went to the Patriots? The Bears receiver could be the hottest name in free agency this year, but it seems highly unlikely they’ll let him leave Chicago.

FORTE’S GONE: The Chicago Bears will not re-sign Matt Forte. Chicago has Jeremy Langford waiting in the wings to replace Forte.

KEEPING THE HONEY BADGER: “It’s hard to say” whether Tyrann Mathieu contract extension can happen. Keeping the Honey Badger around for the long haul is a priority for the Cardinals, but his knee injury last season is complicating things.

JOHNNY’S NEWEST PAL: Johnny Manziel hung out with Louie Anderson at a resort in Texas on Valentine’s Day. I could totally see Johnny Football as a character on Anderson’s show Baskets.

WOODSON TO ESPN: Charles Woodson reportedly joining ESPN now that he’s retired. Woodson may be retired as a player, but we may still get to see him every Sunday.
